 By Valerie's Mother: Betsey Kirkemo The Valerie Foundation has been established in memoriam of my late grandfather, William J. Dunn, known to all who loved him as Bill. Granddad was truly a unique man. His level of acceptance of people who were different was far beyond those of his generation. With the complete cooperation of my Grandmother and his wife, Elise, they lived all over the world and eventually planted roots in the northern suburbs of Sydney, Australia. Those who knew him well understood that Granddad had a rare passion for life and gave 110% effort to each task or hobby he undertook. Not only did he become proficient with what he learned, he became an expert at it, from fishing to HAM radios to hydroponic gardening. Regretfully, the only task/desire left incomplete by his death in 1995 was to master Microsoft Windows! (Not bad for an 85-year old man!) Granddad could find something in common with nearly every person he met; he always had a reason for accomplishing something and never a reason for giving up. When Valerie was born in 1997, I quickly discovered that she inherited her spunk for life from Granddad. After a special spiritual message from him in December 1998, he named himself to me as Valerie’s official guardian angel. It was then that we noticed that Valerie’s baby pictures very closely resembled his at the same age. From that moment on, it has been generally accepted in our family that he is, indeed, looking after her needs. It was in that revelation that he informed me what my personal mission in life would be, what I would name it and how it was to be executed. Every single effort in this foundation has been achieved through his inspiration and spiritual guidance. What you see today has only been materialized through his answers to my prayers. And those of you who know my family also know that behind every great man is a greater woman. The woman and love of his life is my darling grandmother, Elise. I consider myself the luckiest of grandchildren to have a grandmother at my age who is also not only a wonderful role model, but best friend. I love you both. |
